A Timeless English Country Wedding With Chinoiserie Style

‘Our wedding aimed to bring together the feeling of a relaxed and timeless English country wedding, in keeping with Dan’s family who have been living in Somerset for 400 years, with elements of Chinese colour and vibrancy,’ explains Helen.
I love the above description of Helen of her wedding to Daniel. Their wedding most certainly had all the elements of an English country wedding but it had elements of chinoiserie style, thanks to Helen’s Chinese heritage.
The couple got married on the 11th June 2016 at Ston Easton Park, Somerset and first met at a hospital in Oxford, where they both worked as Urology doctors. According to Helen, the proposal was not very romantic. ‘Dan asked me after a trip to a local DIY store which we took together whilst renovating a house,’ says Helen.
When it came to her wedding dress, Helen had an English one and a Chinese one. ‘I bought my dress from the Anna McDonald Bridal Gallery in Thame, Oxfordshire,’ says Helen. ‘I was looking for a modern and elegant dress to suit my small Chinese frame! The dress I chose by Justin Alexander was perfect because it had a high waist and simple outline. My veil was mid-length with lace detail to make the overall look a little more traditional and was also from Anna McDonald. My shoes were gold sparkly sandals from Dune.My Chinese dress (called a QiPao) was handmade from a boutique dress shop in Suzhou, China. Red is traditional at Chinese weddings, and I wanted to retain a sense of the country I was born in.’
The couple had wedding planner Matthew Oliver arrange their big day. ‘He was fantastic at bringing together everything on the day, ‘says Helen.
I am sure you will take many ideas away from Helen and Dan’s timeless English country wedding. The couple’s big day was photographed by Kerry James, from A Tall Long Legged Bird.
