An Elegant English Countryside Wedding In Northamptonshire

Laura's Claire Pettibone dress was perfect for their English countryside wedding.

I am so excited to share Laura and Jonathan’s beautifully elegant English countryside wedding in Northamptonshire. This is one of the first weddings I have showcased by the photographer James Green, and I am looking forward to sharing many more of his in the future as I just love the romantic yet modern style of his photography.

Laura and Jonathan first met at university in London and dated for five years before getting engaged. When he proposed to Laura, Jonathan took her to the roof terrace of the old Victorian mansion block she had lived in at university. Not only does it have incredible views over the London skyline, but it was where they first met when a mutual friend brought Jonathan along to Laura’s party. ‘He had borrowed keys to sneak in and set up a table for two with champagne and flowers,’ says Laura. ‘He popped the question and we sat and watched the sunset over London.’

When it came to planning their big day, Laura and Jonathan knew that they wanted an English countryside wedding as they had both grown up in the country. The couple married on the 1st August 2015 at Stowe Parish Church followed by a reception at Courteenhall in Northamptonshire. ‘The classical landscape gardens and buildings of both Stowe and Courteenhall were our starting point, but we really wanted our wedding to be youthful and fun,’ says Laura.’I am obsessed with Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette, mostly because of the wild and free party scenes that take place in such sumptuous, decadent environments; I guess we wanted to emulate a bit of that. Unfortunately Versailles was a little out of our budget! But the colour palette of soft pastels and antique gold was lifted straight from that film.’

Laura’s ‘Mariposa’ Claire Peittbone dress which she found at Ellie Sanderson in Oxford perfectly suited their English countryside wedding. ‘The floral appliqué lace looks as though it is actually growing around your body,’ says Laura. ‘It reminded me of one of my favourite paintings- Botticelli’s Primavera. As we were getting married in Stowe’s classic landscape gardens, the botanical feel of the dress seemed perfect for the setting.

I am sure you will take many ideas away from Laura and Jonathan’s stunning English countryside wedding.

How stunning does Laura and Jonathan’s English countryside wedding reception look? ‘We found some antique gold candelabras for the tables and Joules absolutely transformed them with a mix of super lush romantic garden roses, alongside trailing wild blackberries,’ explains Laura. ‘She completely understood the aesthetic we wanted.’

wedding table plan

Laura and Jonathan named each of their wedding tables after their favourite children’s books. ‘This was something we had talked about on our first date, but it also ended up being something our families (particularly our mums!) enjoyed discussing in the lead up to our big day as a way for them to reminisce,’ says Laura.

wedding details

Laura and Jonathan used postcards that they had collected from exhibitions as a guest book. They asked guests to write a message on a postcard and pin it up on their guestbook. They are now in frame on a wall in the couple’s home.

wedding day

According to the couple, their whole day ‘was brilliant. ‘If I had to pick one moment, it would be first seeing Laura as she turned down the aisle,’ says Jonny. ‘She was grinning from ear to ear and looked absolutely stunning. I loved her dress, hair, bouquet, everything, she looked incredible.’

wedding dessert

wedding cake

Laura and Jonathan’s wedding cake was made by Laura’s godmother. It was a traditional three-tier cake, decorated with handmade edible lace icing and fresh flowers.

wedding sparklers

According to Laura, one of her highlights was their ‘sparkler run’ off into the night. ‘I remember all our friends and family were buzzing, whooping and cheering and waving their sparklers around in the air,’ says Laura. ‘We had ‘All My Friends’ by LCD Soundsystem playing and everyone seemed so incredibly happy for us. You can tell from the photo that Jonny’s buttonhole is seriously wilting and my hair and make up is a bit of a mess, but I think it is testament to how much fun we had.’
